'Confidential information' is not synonymous with 'Classified information'
- Classified information refers to a type of confidential information that is restricted from dissemination by statute or regulation (ie requires governmental security clearance).
- The lowest level of classified information within the US government and is referred to as 'confidential information' and is defined as information that would cause damage or be prejudicial to national security if publicly available.
- Important for organizations entering into governmental contracts or receiving government funding (SBIR, etc.).
